Laura and Marty married during the early years of the Vietnam War

Laura ran from an abusive father; Marty, struggles with his own demons of the past when as a child his mother left and his father became a deserter during the Korean War

It's hot and Marty has become abusive too

Laura creates a world of fantasy, drawing pictures of a life she imagined from movies she saw as a child

They try to find some escape, Marty to his only friend, Gus

Laura to Louella and Mitzi, a gregarious lesbian couple living in the room next-door, but life becomes frighteningly real as Laura can't pretend any longer and Marty prepares to ship out

Laura is faced with some life changing decisions that will either free or destroy them both
