Welcome to Sarajevo is set in that city during the war in Bosnia and involves a British foreign correspondent stationed in the war-torn city who discovers an orphanage on the front line, attracts international attention to the situation through his news reports, smuggles one of the children out to England, and then has to risk his life returning to the city to get the child's mother to approve his desire to adopt the child

Based on the experiences of ITN journalist, Michael Nicholson, the screenplay is exemplary in its ability to interweave catastrophic public events with an intimate personal story - and to do so in a way that is unsentimental, yet human
