This is an Anthology of rare short plays by female dramatists on the theme of female suffrage

In 1908 the Actresses' Franchise League was founded at a meeting in the Criterion Hotel in London

While "actresses" are specified in the organization's name, anyone working in the theatre was welcomed to join

British actresses who joined included Ellen Terry, Lillah McCarthy, Decima Moore, Cicely Hamilton, Beatrice Forbes-Robertson Hale, Christabel Marshall, Lena Ashwell, Edith Craig and Lily Langtry

Like other suffrage organizations of the time, they printed and distributed pamphlets and held meetings to educate women on suffrage

But it also produced suffrage plays

These astonishing women set up their own theatre companies and engaged with the battle for the vote by writing and performing campaigning plays all over the country

They launched themselves onto the political stage with their satirical plays, sketches and monologues whilst at the same time challenging the staid conventions of the Edwardian Theatre of the day

The legacy of their inspiring work to change both theatre and society has survived in the political theatre, agit-prop and verbatim theatre we know today

This Anthology includes seven of their seminal plays ...

The Apple ~ Inez Bensusan
