Set in Italy during a trying time in the Middle Ages, the hero and his true love must endure both famine and the loss of a boy they wanted to adopt

The tragic tale is an examination of human suffering, yet a triumph of faith and God's love for mankind

They survive a famine and the subsequent chaos in the streets in the remaking of their village, creating new hope for generations to come
