From a San Francisco loft, a stuffy author focuses his binoculars on a prostitute plying her trade. He complains to the landlord, has her evicted and finds he has trouble pounding on his door with vengeance

She figures he owes her a pad for the night, an arrangement that leads to hilarity. She is practically illiterate but quickly absorbs language skills; it does trouble her that having learned to pronounce "impeccable" she can't find a sentence to fit it into

He begins to melt and they find themselves falling in love, a circumstance that can lead only to two things: suicide which they try with clumsy abandon or turning square he as a bookstore clerk and she as a bona fide receptionist

"The first nighters laughed maniacally" ~ N.Y. Daily News

"Animated ... vivid and comic.... Startling intensity and truth" ~ N.Y. Times

"It is a long time since I recall two characters who creep so effectively into the heart of the audience" ~ N.Y. Journal American
