The plot concerns con man Harold Hill, who poses as a boys' band organizer and leader. He proceeds to sell band instruments and uniforms to the naive folk of a small Iowa town, and promises to train the members of the new band

The town's librarian and piano teacher Marian sees through him and knows he has no plans but to skip town with the money

But when Harold helps her younger brother overcome his lisp and social awkwardness, Marian begins to fall in love ...
