Sometimes translated as The Bear, this one-act comedy classic is full of fire and passion

Mrs Popov has been grieving alone for almost a year following the death of her husband

Then a Mr Smirnov comes calling, demanding money he claims her husband owed him

Money he very much needs

Mrs Popov explains she has no money at hand but that she will settle her husband's debts when her steward arrives the day after tomorrow

Smirnov is angered by her refusal to pay and decides not to leave the estate until his debts are paid off

The argument then turns into a debate about true love according to the different genders

Smirnov argues that women are incapable of loving "anybody except a lapdog"

Mrs Popov argues that she wholeheartedly loved her husband although he cheated on her and disrespected her

The argument deteriorates into another shouting match about paying back the debt

"You're a boor! A coarse bear! A Bourbon! A monster!" exclaims Mrs Popov

Insulted, Smiimov challenges her to a duel

Mrs Popov accepts

Impressed by her audacity, Smilnov realizes that he has fallen in love with her ...

This is a great exercise in comedy of manners and can be performed Royalty Free
