George Suggs, an enthusiastic young man, comes to the city to work as a sportscaster. He is fascinated by the hustle and bustle, but then ugly reality makes him cynical and embittered
His career suffers, the wife he should never have married leaves and he loses a mediocre job. Seedy and paranoid, he makes one last attempt to communicate with a hardened prostitute. Finally he becomes another of the city's human flotsam
