Bertolt Brecht trans Eric Bentley

Published by Samuel French Inc

Large Mixed Cast
This is the Acting Edition of one of the world's greatest plays

Set during Europe's Thirty Year War, Brecht's masterpiece was written in 1939 and first produced in Zurich in 1941

In America, it was published in 1941 but didn't reach Broadway till 1963 a memorable production directed by Jerome Robbins and starring Anne Bancroft

It had, of course, by that time been produced to great acclaim throughout the world

When Brecht directed the play in Munich (1950), Eric Bentley, Assistant Director, at his bidding started to translate the play into English

Bentley was to make several translations - the most interesting is published here
