Marian, who has moved away and is now an outsider, returns to her close-knit family for the funeral of their oldest member. Critical of them all, she is furious to hear that her brother has quit university to stay at home. After a final confrontation with the Vicar, Marion realises that she no longer belongs and she slips away leaving the family singing hymns in the church now beautifully decorated for the Harvest Festival.
