It's 135 CE, in the City of Nicopolis

Arrian, Governor of Cappadocia, has come to eulogize the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, in the open air and at the very spot where Arrian was a student of Epictetus thirty years previous

In flashback, we meet Epictetus teaching a group of young men Stoic philosophy and interacting with curious citizens

And a woman who is - against her will - abandoning her baby

Epictetus offers to raise the baby as his own ...
