Stephen Conway, 16, arrives from a Vermont Prep school with his classmate, Casey Ford, at the Manhattan apartment of Casey's mother, Ida, a former nightclub singer

A storm has prevented Stephen from making it to his home to New Jersey, where he has been summoned because his father, Russell, has been in a bad accident

Meanwhile Casey's father, Jack, is missing in action in Anzio, Italy

When Stephen's staid mother, Hazel, unexpectedly shows up, we discover how the fate of one man is related to the fate of the other
