This is the story of the turbulent, humorous and heart breaking relationship between Junius Brutus Booth the brilliant, half mad, alcoholic 19th century tragedian and his son Edwin, who became a great tragic actor in his own right

Junius, needing a companion to keep him company and to keep him sober or try to takes the shy, inarticulate young Edwin on the road with him

As they travel across America, a complicated relationship develops between the violent but loving father and his adoring but ambitious son which results in Edwin taking his first steps as an artist and a man, in the near destruction of the family, and finally, in the death of Junius
