      Lights up

Setting: The scene takes place outdoors. It can take place at any time. The play
takes places as one continuous scene

Narrator’s voice is heard from offstage

NARRATOR: Not far away in the make believe town of Jack, there lived
a young man by the name of Jack.

      Jack Stalk enters

NARRATOR: Jack was a very brave and adventurous young man.

Jack Stalk poses like he’s brave and adventurous

JACK STALK: I am a very brave and adventurous young man.

NARRATOR: More than anything, Jack loved to climb.

Jack Stalk walks up to a tree

JACK STALK: Here is a tree. I think I’ll climb this one today.

      Climbs tree

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, just on the other side of town there lived a
young man by the name of Jack.

      Jack Nimble enters

NARRATOR: Jack was always very good at track. He was especially good
      at the high jump.

JACK NIMBLE: I am especially good at the high jump.

Prepares himself. Then jumps over a candlestick

NARRATOR: He had to be good so he wouldn’t get burned.

      Jack Nimble Picks up candlestick
JACK NIMBLE: Maybe I’ll try a taller candle.

      He exits

NARRATOR: Meanwhile on the other side of the other side of town,
there lived a young man named Jack.

Jack Hill enters with a bandage on head and carrying a pail

NARRATOR: Jack and his sister had the daily chore of bringing water
      from the well.

      Jack Hill stumbles and falls

NARRATOR: However due to Jack’s lack of coordination, his sister
      requested a new chore.

      Jack Hill stands up

JACK HILL: I guess I have to go back up the hill for more water.

      He exits

NARRATOR: Finally, just down the road lived a young man named Jack.

Jack Horner enters with a pie. He sits in a corner

NARRATOR: Jack had many passions in life, but his greatest passion
was that he loved a good plum pie.

JACK HORNER: I love a good plum pie.

NARRATOR: And he always had plenty to share.

      JACK HORNER: Always.

NARRATOR: Jack, Jack, Jack and Jack have nothing in common. In fact
they have never even met. But that was about to change. One evening at
a city council meeting it was proposed to change school boundaries.
But that didn’t make a difference since the boys were in different
classes. However, fate was about to bring them together for the first
time. As Jack climbed out of his tree…

Jack Stalk climbs down from tree

      NARRATOR: …he bumped into Jack…

Jack Hill enters as Jack Stalk bumps into him

NARRATOR: …who dropped his pail. The spilled water caused Jack to
slip as he was practicing his high jump

Jack Nimble enters and slips on water

NARRATOR: …and Jack landed right in Jack’s pie.

Jack Nimble falls on Jack Horner’s pie

NARRATOR: And this is where our story begins. Sort of.

JACK STALK: I am so sorry. I didn’t see you coming.

JACK HILL: That is ok. (To Jack Nimble) Are you ok? Sorry I spilled
      my water.

JACK NIMBLE: No problem. (To Jack Horner) Sorry I landed in your
      pie.

JACK HORNER: That’s ok. I have plenty more.

JACK STALK: I’m Jack. What’s your name?

JACK HILL: I’m Jack. Nice to meet you. And you are?

JACK NIMBLE: I’m Jack. Nice to meet you. And what’s your name?

JACK HORNER: Jack. I’m not good at remembering names. I hope I can
      remember all of yours.

JACK STALK: I know how you feel. I have the same problem.

JACK HILL: I have an idea. We can all wear nametags.

JACK NIMBLE: That is a great idea and I know just where I can get
some. Hold on. I’ll be right back.

Runs then leaps off stage. Runs back on with nametags

JACK HORNER: Wow! You’re pretty fast.

JACK NIMBLE: There’s one here for each of us.

They all put on their nametags

JACK HILL: It’s almost like we belong to a club.

JACK NIMBLE: What kind of a club? What should we call our club?

JACK STALK: We need to have something in common.

JACK HORNER: You’re right. It doesn’t seem like we have anything in
      common.

JACK HILL: That’s true. We have absolutely nothing in common.

NARRATOR: So the guys all sat and thought.

      ALL: Think, think, think.

NARRATOR: Suddenly Jack had an idea and jumped up.

JACK NIMBLE: (Jumps up) I have an idea.

JACK STALK: What is it Jack?

NARRATOR: Just like everything else so far, Jack’s idea had
absolutely nothing to do with the story or the club.

JACK NIMBLE: This has nothing to do with the story or the club, but
      who likes to play baseball?

      JACK HORNER: I do.

      JACK HILL: Me too.

      JACK STALK: Sounds fun.

JACK HORNER: So who’s on first?

      JACK NIMBLE: Jack’s on first.

JACK HORNER: Then where is Jack?

      JACK NIMBLE: Jack’s on second.

JACK HILL: I thought Jack was on first?

JACK NIMBLE: No. Jack’s on first and Jack’s on second.

JACK STALK: Then what about Jack?
      JACK HORNER: Jacks on first.

JACK NIMBLE: No. Jack’s on second and Jack’s on third.

JACK HILL: Then where is Jack?

      JACK NIMBLE: Jack’s on first.

JACK STALK: I thought that Jack was on third?

      JACK HORNER: Jack’s on first.

JACK NIMBLE: No. Jack’s on second.

JACK STALK: But I thought Jack was on third?

JACK NIMBLE: No. Jack’s on first, Jacks on second and Jack’s on
      third.

JACK HILL: I thought Jack was on second.

JACK STALK: No. Jack’s on third.

JACK HORNER: But he just said Jack was on first.

JACK NIMBLE: Let me try it one more time.  Jack’s on first, Jack’s on
      second and Jack’s on third.

      JACK HILL: Oh!

      JACK STALK: That makes sense.

JACK HORNER: But Jack, where are you going to be?

JACK NIMBLE: I’m going to be catcher.

JACK HILL: Then who’s going to be pitcher?

JACK STALK: Yeah. We need a pitcher.

JACK HORNER: Can’t play without a pitcher.

JACK NIMBLE: I know someone. She’s pretty good. Has a good arm.

JACK HILL: Sounds good. What’s her name?

JACK NIMBLE: Her name is Jack. You guys might have met her.

JACK STALK: Jack? No. I don’t know Jack.

      JACK HORNER: Me neither.

JACK HILL: When can we meet her?

JACK NIMBLE: I’ll go get her right now.

Runs then leaps off stage. Re-enters with Jack

JACK HORNER: Boy. Jack be quick.

JACK NIMBLE: I’d like you to meet my new friends. This is Jack.
That’s Jack and over there is Jack. Guys, this is Jack.

They all shake hands during this next sequence

      JACK STALK: Jack.

      JACK: Jack

      JACK HILL: Jack.

      JACK: Jack.

      JACK HORNER: Jack.

      JACK: Jack.

JACK STALK: So. How long have you two known each other?

      JACK: Not long.

JACK NIMBLE: We just met when I went off to get her.

JACK HILL: So. What do you guys want to do?

JACK HORNER: I don’t know. (To Jack Stalk) What do you want to do?

JACK STALK: I don’t know. (To Jack Nimble) What do you want to do?

JACK NIMBLE: I don’t know. (To Jack) What do you want to do?

      JACK: I don’t know.

NARRATOR: So not knowing what to do, Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack and their
new friend Jack all sat down and thought.

      ALL: Think, think, think.

NARRATOR: Suddenly, Jack had an idea.

      JACK: I have an idea.

      JACK HILL: What is it?

      JACK: Let’s play a game.

      JACK STALK: What game?

      JACK: Jack’s.

      JACK NIMBLE: Sounds fun.

JACK HORNER: How do you play?

JACK: (Takes out jacks) It’s easy. Bounce the ball and pick up the
      jacks.

      Demonstrates

      JACK NIMBLE: I’m first.

      Takes turn

      JACK HILL: My turn.

      Takes turn

      JACK STALK: Let me try.

      Takes turn

      JACK HORNER: Now my turn.

      Takes turn. Messes up

JACK HORNER: My thumb got in the way.

JACK: That was fun. (Pause) So what do you want to do now?

      JACK HILL: I know.

      JACK HORNER: What is it?

JACK HILL: Let’s take a hike, up a hill.

JACK STALK: Sounds like a good idea.  I love to climb.

JACK NIMBLE: I’ll get there first.

JACK HORNER: I’ll bring the snacks.

      JACK: I’ll bring the games.

      JACK HORNER: So which way?

JACK HILL: (Points stage left aisle) Over hill.

      JACK STALK: Over dale?

JACK NIMBLE: Well, lead the way.

      JACK: And we’ll follow.

      They all exit

NARRATOR: With Jack leading the way, Jack, Jack, Jack and their new
friend Jack began their journey up the hill. However due to Jack’s
lack of coordination they would never make it to the top. Meanwhile,
at the bottom of the hill a very serious crime was occurring. Someone
was stealing Jack’s candlestick, Jack’s plum pie, Jack’s water
pail and Jack’s game. And just to add to the crime Jack’s tree was
pushed over. This is the worst crime that ever occurred in the make
believe town of Jack. In fact it might be the only crime. After their
short walk then tumble, Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack and their new friend
Jack all returned, a little sore, but in ok condition.

All Jack’s are wearing a bandage around their head. They enter

NARRATOR: Jack was the first to notice that something was not right.

JACK STALK: Something is not right.
