James Moffat Price: $24.95
Florence Austral, born Florence Wilson in Melbourne, was one of
the world’s greatest Wagnerian sopranos
She made her debut at Covent Garden in 1922 as Brünnhilde in Die Walküre, a role which remained her most famous; and her forceful and lyrical voice is recorded on many HMV acoustic and electric recordings
Struck by multiple sclerosis at the height of her career, she was finally forced to abandon the operatic stage but continued concert work
She toured widely to Australia and America with her husband, the flautist John Amadio
Tragically, she died in 1968 in a Newcastle nursing home, forgotten by the rest of the world
Through the dedicated researches of James Moffatt the extraordinary life of this brilliant soprano has at last been brought to our attention
